#FeatureFriday: AVERDONIA by goneMUNE
Singaporean artist goneMUNE recently released her concept/cyberopera album ‘Averdonia’. After discovering it on YouTube with a good friend of mine I was immediately enraptured by the dark yet poppy vibes on offer so it didn’t take long for me to decide and preorder her album.
‘Averdonia’ starts with an intro that feels sparse yet incredibly atmospheric and evocative. It really sets the tone for the tale of Averdonia, the cyborg in search of her humanity, which fittingly feels very cinematic. This stark vocally led piece of Ambient soon trades in its cinematic feel for more thumping beats and bass that are very reminiscent of the dark and oppressive atmosphere of Darkwave. This however is complemented with some Dreampop and Shoegaze sensibilities especially in the production department.
This combined creates a vibe that while overall dark and moody evokes an atmosphere that is equally dreamlike and beautiful. And when some harsher sounding sounds enter the fray, reminiscent of more extreme genres such as Hardstyle and Hyperpop, it offers even more variety that make this 7-track EP just fly by with its excellent pacing.
All in all goneMUNE is an artist that takes what’s good about an established genre and moves it forward in her own unique way offering something intimately familiar to the purveyors of darker sounds but keeps it fresh by not caring about rigid genre expectations.![]()
AVERDONIA by goneMUNE was a fun listen, at times atmospheric and dreamy, remniscient of Fever Ray and Austra especially in the opening songs. As this EP is also a story described by the artist as a “fractured journey” it makes sense that some tracks like PRAYER and GLITCH completely shake up your expectations, surprising the ears by leaning almost hardstyle. I always appreciate good cyperpunk and an interesting storyline!

AVERDONIA by goneMUNE is an exercise in emotion, it creates a dense atmosphere. It has an emotional depth that at the same time allows itself to be club worthy. It feels both organic and metallic, a crossover between human and machine. The synths have an analog warmth and the vocals feel ethereal and melodic. This recording steers from ambient to heavy club beats naturally and feels in the end like a musical story.
I enjoyed listening to this.
