Song-A-Day by Dokpetra
An album where each song was written, recorded and produced in 24 hours or less. Created April-May 2024.
Imagine the challenge of a song a day? Written and recorded. In a day? Throw in a healthy sense of humor, a natural talent for melody and a childlike playfulness. What you get is a rip of different genres, inventiveness, storytelling and in the middle of it all some truly cool songs.
MY partner and I talk about being playful, the act of play being healthy. It is something I have actively advocated most of my life without realizing it’s importance and this album is testament to acknowledging your creativity, it brims with it. It plays with melody and creativity. but.
Then it drops a song like track 9., Luv and you feel the hairs on the back of you neck stand up. Not just the first listen either, it holds it’s beauty on multiple listens. Simply gorgeous.
From the first track you are in what you are in for, it almost feels like it should be a kid’s tv show theme, has that 90s nicklelodeon thing going on. After that it twists and turns, exploring different genres, techniques, it doesn’t sit still. Doesn’t ponder, dwell, linger in a style. It takes it’s own journey. When it Indie pops it really pops. When it deviates it does it well, always looking for a different way to fulfil it’s pruprose.
If you love music I implore you to engage with this album. It might not all be for you but I promise there will be something that you will find intetresting.

An album called ‘Song-A-Day’ accompanied by the liner note “Each song written, recorded and produced in 24 hours or less”. This is the type of album that would be a hard skip for me based on the concept alone. Nothing more than a flex resulting in half-assed hurried songs. And if it wasn’t for the fact that Mark chose this album this week for us to review it *would’ve* been a hard skip for me.
Well, I bet you already know where this is going though… yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. Granted, given the concept you’re gonna have a bit of a mixed output here but considering the time limit she imposed upon herself the tracks present here are all quite impressive in both arrangements and execution. Like, I do not get the impression that any corners have been cut. This is actually a *song* a day with no real fillers to speak of.
That’s not even to speak of the wild eclecticness on display here which might be a byproduct of the ‘Song-a-day’ concept or just the fact that we’re dealing with an insanely creative artist here. Generally the songs tend to be an electronic rendition of Indie-poppish music but it isn’t afraid to hover between Synthpop, cartoon-like music, Experimental and so forth. With even an excursion into funky Jazz being a personal favourite of mine.
Overall I find this album to be super creative and quirky in tone and obviously has been a product of love for the artist resulting in an amazing set of songs that you should not skip on. Don’t be me please…

I have complicated feelings about this album. Dokpetra apparently wrote, recorded and produced each song within 24 hours, so it seems like a somewhat random selection, instead of a curated one. Some songs felt more like experiments with rhythms and vocal patterns, only to be followed by tremendously heartfelt ones.
Here’s the thing: as an album, this didn’t work for me at all. However the individual tracks were either very well performed and produced songs, or at least fun explorations of what an artist can do with music. It’s this feeling of fun and lightheartedness that I find quite appealing.
The song “If It’s All The Same To You” for example is something that took me by complete surprise and got a chuckle or two out of me. I won’t spoil the deal with it here, but it’s something that should be experienced!
What else works in this albums favor? Dokpetra’s singing voice is extremely pleasant; bright and energetic with great control and a sense for theatrics. The production in general is very well done, especially considering the short time frame. And everything just sounds really good!
Overall, I had a good time with these songs. There is a lot of fun that can be found in this collection, so I’d absolutely recommend giving it a listen.
