My Childhood Home Was Your Hospice
by LeGuin’s Blade Teachings
Music like this sometimes has a feeling not dissimilar to a fog, like fog it’s not thick in substance but in perception. A density that is also light to the touch. It’s a weird sensation musically but something I enjoy and admire.
It also has a drive and intention that is thick, muscular but defined and slight as well. A low fat density would with the power to lift a bus. at the same time has a delicacy to it that you can submerge yourself into or you can just surf the surface and enjoy the ride.
Whenever I hear music like this, not in style, but its context I have the notion that it is semi-improvised around an intuitive structure. Improvisational but momentary inspiration? Music created in the moment built on an idea, a feeling, an emotion.
On the face of it there’s the doom guitars and the intense driving drums but listen closer and you can hear subtle guitars interweaving in the mist. Synths slinking around like ghosts. It mixes clean delayed goth style lead lines with dropped tuning distorted riffs. It moves with purpose and never settles but still manages to lock into it’s groove.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a dark, moody and atmospheric dance through some Gothic infused doom rock

Untidy Music
With a title like “My Childhood Home Was Your Hospice” I don’t think anyone would expect something super happy from this album! Rightfully so, because this instrumental album by LeGuin’s Blade Teachings has other qualitites. Mar, the artist behind this project, classifies their music as doom/shoegaze and while elements of both are clearly here, the result is pretty unique. There is a lot of focus on disharmonics, selective rawness and a generally full sound. The songs have a coarse texture to them, that gave me an uneasy feeling; even gentle touches get distorted and drowned in fuzz, while the percussion drives the songs forward at a steady pace, rarely relenting to let an atmospheric moment play out.
The mood is quite dark, although not crushingly so. There are moments of playfulness and levity sparsely intersected here and there. I find that little interludes like that are a fantastic way of telling a story without lyrics, so I fully approve! Overall, I absolutely recommend this album. It’s dark, a little chaotic and at times abrasive, but all these elements work together to transport a mood of loneliness and simmering anger. It’s interesting and not the easiest listen, but well worth it! A pretty excellent start to our year here.

Opening with a dirty synth playing a simple yet catchy looping rhythm you would be forgiven for thinking Leguin’s Blade Teachings would be dropping some late 90’s inspired EDM or Industrial on us. But nothing is less true as it quickly reveals itself to be a moody Doom/Post-metal joint instead that immediately captures your attention yet again with its captivating sense of sprawling melody that along with some lovely meandering drum work takes you on a hypnotic journey.
A journey you would assume is gonna be a deeply depressing one based on genre trappings but Leguin’s Blade Teachings offers more than the usual depressing dirge here as there is this sense of optimism that’s carried through its beautiful sense of melody. Rather than just a slow and dragging dirge LGBT (haha, okay. Just got the acronym lol. Nice one!) offers a moody sound that is dynamic in both its rhythms as well as its vibes. It’s a record that, despite its short runtime, just refuses to stand still.
And that is excellently displayed here by eventually revealing that there was a dark underbelly brewing underneath all along where the sound effortlessly switches to a more threatening and foreboding sound that displays that more typical doomy dirge you come to expect. And combined with the aforementioned electronic elements, that yes, remain an element throughout, it really shows off the stunning versatility on display here.

My favourite track is “You Left a Hole in My Heart, I Hope You Found Your Relief” the guitar is excellent through the whole EP but on the final track: the haunting voices and the drums build up together towards fantastic heights. you can picture experiencing this live when you close your eyes
