#FeatureFriday -Bandcamp Friday Issue

This week with it being Bandcamp Friday we have chosen to pick an artist or release each. So if you are looking for some great music out our recommendations below. Maybe check out the playlist and previous articles at the bottom of the page.

Be groovy and wotnot make a musician happy and buy something…

First up is Florgoth:

To say that this EP is different from the music I usually listen to, would be a massive understatement. But after hearing “infinite expansion” about a year ago, I find myself returning to it occasionally.
What I find fascinating about it, is it’s lack of obvious structure without sounding random. There are deliberate choices being made to create an otherworldly but grounded atmosphere.

This is done by combining the artificial sounds of feedback and glitches with the organic ones of a woodwind; the crushing hostility of a machine and the (literal) breath of a human being. I get the feeling of actual dialog between diametrically opposed forces or powers, calling, responding, interweaving but never really harmonizing. The soundscapes feel massive and even intimidating, but it always returns to the human element.

This is music that is difficult for me to recommend, just because it is so very different from what people (including myself) are used to, however, I enjoy and appreciate it greatly and would hope that others can give it a try too. The experience is absolutely worth it!

One related thing: Right now, Sylvia Hinz is fighting against cancer. If you enjoy her work and want to support her in these tough times, you can do so here: ko-fi.com/dissonant_wi…

Eoin Mac Ionmhain on Bluesky

First off, “I Am Legend” is one of my all time favourite books, seeing the Charton Heston film Omega Man at a very early age was my introduction to horror but also my introduction to apocalyptic horror. The concept of turning the story into an album of songs and music based around it is simple and inspired. Especially when you give it a listen.

To say I was taken aback is not poetic license,I fucking well loved it. With it’s Irish Folk infused styling it isn’t just a word for word recitation of the story but a work of art. It gives it a folk horror edge. Taking it’s cues from old 70s horror it uses an array of different instruments to create soundscapes that remain musical despite the dissonance created. It always resolves, a neat trick.

The use of drones and simple haunting melodies make way for well organized musical thoughts that bookend songs that push the narrative along. It’s always creating tension. Build an release but ultimately it away stays true to it’s intentions. If you love soundtracks and concept albums you should go get this. It’s free but maybe drop them a few coins because whatever you pay is not enough.

Fanfuckingtastic.

My pick this week is from an artist whose work brought me great comfort during a difficult time in my life a few years ago. The voice, words, and guitar of @angiebluemusic.bsky.social took me to a calmer place when I desperately needed it.

I don’t know if I can choose one favorite from this compilation. Maybe it’s “Cold Universe” or “Your Love,” or “One Day at a Time.” In any case, this music has been important to me. Thanks, @angiebluemusic.bsky.social
