If there’s anything that I need in music, it’s emotion. And Bity Booker’s music has an emotional clarity that is pretty rare. At first glance, the songs on this EP are very simple; voice and acoustic guitar are the only elements, with the slightest bit of reverb to fill the soundscape out just a bit more at times. However, if the listener is paying attention, they can notice little flourishes in the guitar playing and a playfulness in the vocals; tiny things that accentuate the emotion of a piece, without adding unnecessary baggage.
As much as I love a good wall of sound and complexity that challenges my listening abilities, music that is able to bring its message across without going bigger than it absolutely needs to, is pretty much the expert level of songwriting to me. If it sounds as warm, pretty and inviting as this does? Then we have something truly impressive.
What kind of music are we talking about here? I’d put this squarely in the contemporary folk genre, with songs talking about enjoying our time, about hope and beauty. Bity’s bright, very clearly enunciated voice is responsible for carrying the song’s melodies, with the guitar used to provide a foundation for the vocals.
I can not stress enough, how truly impactful Bity’s music is. It is simple, but direct in intent and execution and it is very well produced. It’s gentle, gorgeous and meaningful. This is music that can touch the listener right in the soul, without forcing itself on them.

There is something to be said about artists that lay their soul bare armed with just their voice and an acoustic guitar. It pretty much requires the song to be able to speak for themselves since you can’t distract listeners with extra layers of instrumentation. And Bity Booker succeeds wonderfully in this regard. Her folky sweet tunes are accompanied by her fragile and amazingly expressive voice. I like to call it ‘Faerical’ which is a literal translation of a Dutch word we use here called ‘Feeëriek’, basically fairylike… but that sounds dumb so ‘Faerical’ it is.
It’s the type of vibey music that makes me wanna lay in a grassy field on a nice spring day surrounded by butterflies and bumblebees. And that’s not to say the material here is light and easily digestible. Absolutely not as apart from the EP’s opener they all have a slight gloomy feel to them but the overall package is just so soothing in nature not to mention how organic it all feels. This all feels like it’s recorded live in the studio and that always adds such a beautiful fragility to a record, especially in this genre.

So I should start by saying that I have loved this E.P for a fair few years. The simple finger picked guitar and those gorgeous vocals. They hold a melody like a mother holding a baby. Delicate.
When I first listened to, Dreaming in the Morning, I was convinced that Bity had to be Scandinavian, it has that icy folk sound, not to say it’s cold but there is so little reverb, it is applied carefully and the guitar is so beautifully recorded allowing the nylon strings to dance. It’s such a simple dance that it’s hard not to get carried away in it.
Each song takes a simple guitar arrangement expertly played and almost childlike lyrics and that’s what caught me as feeling almost like they were designed for young ears. Easy for children to take in, sell a message that children need but it’s deceptive because if you heart is open you can receive the message. The positivity emanates, it radiates love and what is better than that?
This an emotion, a perfect love letter to the world, it tells you to embrace a possible, beautiful world and by turn it is itself a beautiful document.
